You have two sources of intuition-are you using both?

How intuition works:

In recent years science has discovered that there is intuition in the three brains. The Head brain, the Heart brain, and the Gut brain converse with each other and the latter two do this through intuition, in addition other methods of communication.

What is Intuition?

The Heart brain as a source of intuition

Intuition is the process of perceiving or knowing something without conscious reasoning: knowledge of events such as an act of nature that has yet to happen; or knowledge of a distant material object such as an as-yet unseen obstruction blocking the highway ahead. Researchers with the Institute of HeartMath and many others who have conducted numerous controlled and scientifically validated studies over more than half a century have expanded the definition of intuition to include not only conscious perception by the mind alone, but also by the body’s entire psychophysiological system. This unconscious perception often is evidenced by subtle changes in emotions and measurable physiological changes that can be detected throughout the body, according to the study Electrophysiological Evidence of Intuition: McCraty, Atkinson and Bradley, 2004.

At the center of this ability is the human heart, which encompasses a degree of intelligence whose sophistication and vastness we are continuing to understand and explore. We now know this intelligence may be cultivated to our advantage in many ways.

The Gut brain as a source of intuition

The neuroscience model proposed by Grant Soosalu and Marvin Oka in their paper the Neuroscience and the Three Brains of Leadership - Leader Values https://www.leader-values.com/FCKfile/.../mBIT%20and%20Leadership%20article.p

“Our findings indicate that there are three core Prime Functions for each of the three neural networks, or ‘brains’ The functions of the heart and gut brain is:

HEART BRAIN PRIME FUNCTIONS

·EMOTING – emotional processing (e.g. anger, grief, hatred, joy, happiness etc.)

·VALUES – processing what’s important to you and your priorities (and its relationship to thee motional strength of your aspirations, dreams, desires, etc.)

·RELATIONAL AFFECT – your felt connection with others (e.g. feelings of

love/hate/indifference, compassion/uncaring, like/dislike, etc.)

GUT BRAIN PRIME FUNCTIONS

·CORE IDENTITY – a deep and visceral sense of core self, and determining at the deepest levels what is ‘self’ versus ‘not-self’

·SELF-PRESERVATION – protection of self, safety, boundaries, hungers and aversions

·MOBILIZATION – motility, impulse for action, gutsy courage and the will to act

Cognitive Principle Matrix [CPM]-Intuition.

CPM has upgraded its model to include intuition, coming from not only the Gut brain [gut feel!] but also from the Heart brain [trust your heart!]

Based on the work of Grant Soosalu and Marvin Oka, mentioned above, intuition can now been defined based on our two basic drives, fear and greed as shown in the CPM matrix of needs, principles and behaviors shown below:

Note: In simplistic terms “Greed” means something I want or need while “Fear” is the opposite, something I don’t want or need.

At the highest level of the CPMatrix, that is, at a spiritual or transcendence level, the two drives are achieved by:

  • By unconditionally giving [for greed] the relationship principles of trust, respect, acceptance or commitment, without wanting them back. This is achieved while having strong and clear, rules, boundaries and consequences to protect the giver.
  • By unconditionally [for fear] accepting the negative principles, negative concerns and influencing principles. This is achieved by having spiritual hope, which is knowing that the outcome can be successfully achieved, even if you do not know how that will happen. However, you can only have hope in an outcome where you have sufficient level of knowledge, skill, experience and passion to achieve the outcome. For example, a formula-one racing car driver will be driving intuitively at a subconscious level. The subconscious mind is working on million times faster than the conscious mind.

How to know when to use the “Heart intuition” or the “Gut intuition”

The rule is:

  • When positive emotions or behaviors are involved, use intuition from the heart [greed] The main tools used are gratitude and compassion.
  • When negative emotions or behaviors are involved, use intuition from the gut. [fear]. The main tools used are courage and impulse control.

Note: The tools are subconsciously used when you "stop thinking".

A diagram of the model is shown below:

How is the head brain is involved with intuition:

In CPM the role of the Head brain is to set goals and direct itself and the other three brains.

If the head brain has influence over the problem or opportunity and it can be solved with either logic or positive thinking, then the Head brain should take control. However, if that is not the case, then the Head brain should direct itself to stop thinking and default to the intuition from the Heart or Gut brain. Note: CPM expects that science will eventually find that the Spirit brain will also provide intuition.

If the Head brain has concern and no influence and it ruminates negatively over the problem, it can lead to what CPM calls a very bad habit, caused by a negative-comparative-predictive-loop as shown below. When this occurs intuition is cut off and it is hard to retrieve.

Note: The key element is the Heart brain taking things personally and "worrying" over the outcome. It generates negative energy causing fear to attach to the other negative principles resulting in negative concerns. That is, anger becomes rage, confusion becomes hopelessness, guilt becomes shame etc. The predictive mind predicts and the comparative mind compares its own predictions.

Understanding Intuition and the Predictive mind:

In CPM there are two minds, namely, the comparative mind and the predictive mind. The three brains all use the comparative or predictive mind. For example:

  • The Gut brain uses instincts as a comparison to take action against a threat.
  • The Head brain mainly uses comparative thinking in the form of logic to make a decision.
  • Intuition in both the Heart brain and the Gut brain are based on the predictive mind. The research of HeartMath’s shows that the predictive mind “knows” information before the conscious mind is aware of it.
  • Intuition will be the most valuable when there is a passion for the goal and the person has knowledge, skill and experience related to the goal.
  • Based on the work of neural pathways by Marcus E. Raichle, intuition and the predictive mind is at its peak when the Task Positive Network is in a Neutral state. [stops thinking] and the Default Mode Network is in “Creative Mode” as shown below:

Note: The Head brain is in its most vulnerable position, with no access to intuition, when it is in a TPN-Negative thinking or DMN-Mind wandering [day dreaming] or DMN Procedural negative [bad habit] state.

Note: Matt Killingworth's study of 15000 people across 83 occupations found that people were in a DMN -Mind Wandering negative state 46% of the time and were unhappy.

Most people are using daydreaming, rather than their intuition.

How the predictive mind and intuition are connected:

  • The predictive mind predicts from the bottom up. That is, it uses exiting knowledge [implicit and explicit], skills and experience to predict and tell [intuition] you the next step in the pathway, whereas the comparative mind needs a pathway leading to the goal.
  • The predictive mind also predicts from the top down. That is, it will tell you through intuition that you need more skill, knowledge or experience to move to the next step and also, where to go to get that information.
